Community Outreach

The impact of AIDS, tuberculosis and other life threatening illnesses on children is devastating. The challenge is to minister to these children and their families in ways that reflect the unconditional love and acceptance of Jesus Christ.

Precious Jewels Ministry is helping to identify actions that need to be taken in developing policies and programs which support and protect the rights of children living in families affected by HIV/AIDS and other chronic and/or terminal illnesses. PJM began to reach out to children at risk on Smokey Mountain (the former Manila garbage dump) in 1987, providing care for malnourished, neglected and abandoned children. Over the years and in all its activities, PJM has sought and continues to seek to strengthen the family's role in the nurture and healing of the whole child through actions that are built on relationships rather than on the programs themselves. Today this ministry has expanded to over 20 communities in Metro Manila and in outlying areas.

THE COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

  • Home visitation
  • Children's activities encouraging values formation and non-formal education
  • Family cluster groups providing spiritual enrichment and communal support
  • Local community co-operatives providing livelihood, mutual assistance and life skills
  • Workshops conducted by PJM staff, involving AIDS education and health care for groups concerned with child-caring and community development
  • Children and family summer camps run by PJM staff, fostering values development, co-operative activities and peer support
